UK Crypto ETNs: They’re LIVE… But There’s A Huge Catch.

Crypto ETNs are now officially live in the UK for retail investors.

After delays and a confusing period where the ban was technically lifted but no products were actually available, the rollout has finally started to happen. As of right now, some of the world’s biggest asset managers, including BlackRock and Bitwise, have listed their Bitcoin and Ethereum products on the London Stock Exchange.

This is a huge step forward for UK investors. But, the story is not that simple.

  • Which platforms are actually offering them?
  • Why is the UK’s biggest platform refusing to sell them?

Most importantly, what is the huge tax catch hiding in the government’s own policy that could turn you into a “forced seller”?

This article breaks down what’s just happened, covering where you can actually buy these products and the major risks you need to be aware of.

A Quick Reminder: What Is a Crypto ETN?

What is a crypto ETN?

An ETN stands for Exchange-Traded Note.

  • Unlike an ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund), which holds the underlying asset, an ETN is an unsecured debt security.
  • It represents a promise from the issuer to pay the return of a specific asset.
  • ETNs are designed to track the price of an asset without requiring you to actually buy that asset.
  • Investors gain price exposure, not ownership — you don’t own the digital asset itself.

However, crypto ETNs in the UK differ: they are required to be physically backed by the underlying digital assets, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

At least 90% of the crypto assets must be held in cold storage, with these extracts coming from the London Stock Exchange’s Crypto ETN factsheet by the way.

You’ll see this with the individual provider’s crypto ETPs also, like this one below from Bitwise.

Which UK Crypto ETNs Exist?

There are many UK Crypto ETNs which have entered, for example the four Bitwise products you can see here,

…and Wisdom Tree. While some of these are initially only available to professional investors, we can expect more to become available for retail, sparking the inevitable competition for fees that was seen in the US when ETFs were first introduced.

The Great Divide: Who Is Actually Selling Them?

The products are listed on the London Stock Exchange. That means you can just log into your ISA or SIPP and buy them, right?

No, this has created a clear divide between different platforms.

Hargreaves Lansdown, has confirmed they will not be offering crypto ETNs to customers to begin with, aiming for early 2026.

However, other platforms have confirmed they are offering these new crypto ETNs. Trading 212 and Saxo UK have confirmed that they are offering these new crypto ETNs.

The rollout has not been smooth across all platforms. Some users are reporting issues with brokers like AJ Bell, who don’t appear ready, or with Interactive Investors, where only small investments have reportedly been successful. Many platforms are still considering their position or are implementing the changes slowly, for example, by:

Allowing the trading of crypto ETNs,

But not yet allowing them in ISAs.

Given that UK Crypto ETNs are traded on the London Stock Exchange, you would need to use one of these brokers to trade them. However, most people will want to look for providers who offer exposure to these in tax efficient ISAs or SIPPs.

Government Regulatory Hurdles

But even here, there are hurdles.

Because the FCA has classified these as “Restricted Mass Market Investments”, you can’t just click “buy”. You will have to go through an “appropriateness assessment” basically, a questionnaire to prove you understand the risks, there should be cooling off period, risk warnings, and no incentives to invest.

The FCA is clear that, because these are restricted mass market investments, they’re not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, or FSCS.

If the ETN provider itself goes bust, your money is not protected.

The 20% Growth & The ISA “Game-Changer”

Despite the hurdles, why is this still such a big deal?

A report by IG is projecting this move could spark 20% growth in the UK’s digital asset market and the main reason for that is the tax wrapper and the large subsequent adoption due to this.

The government has officially confirmed that these new crypto ETNs can be held in a Stocks and Shares ISA, and, for many people, this is an advantage that they were waiting for. It means that you can currently invest up to 20,000 pounds to get exposure to the price of Bitcoin or Ethereum, and any profits you make could be completely free from Capital Gains Tax, rather than having to pay the increased capital gains tax rates. This creates a new, enticing alternative for UK retail investors.

Before this, if you wanted tax-free Bitcoin exposure, your main option was to buy shares in a company that holds Bitcoin on its balance sheet and hold these shares in your ISA or SIPP.

Now, you have a choice:

Do you buy a share in a company that holds Bitcoin?

Or do you buy a simple, low-cost ETN that just tracks the price of Bitcoin?

For simple, tax-efficient exposure, these new ETNs are a massive development.

But, you have to know about the catch.

The Great ISA Tax CATCH: Are You a “Forced Seller”?

This is something that a lot of people aren’t aware of and might get overlooked. If you look at the official HMRC policy paper on crypto ETNs, it confirms the crypto ETNs are eligible for inclusion in stocks and shares ISAs. But then it says this:

  • From April 6th, 2026, the government plans to reclassify these products.
  • They will no longer be eligible for inclusion in a Stocks and Shares ISA.
  • Instead, they will become qualifying investments for the Innovative Finance ISA IF ISA.

What does this mean for you?

It means if you buy a Crypto ETN in your Stocks & Shares ISA today, in 2026, your platform will have to move it to an IFISA account. But the problem is that most ISA providers in the UK do not currently offer an IF ISA.

This creates a difficult scenario.

If your provider, let’s say Trading 212 doesn’t have an IF ISA product ready by 2026, or if they can’t support the transfer of that asset, what happens?

You could become a “forced seller”.

This doesn’t mean you’d suddenly get a tax bill if it’s held in an ISA, but it does mean your ISA provider would be forced to sell your crypto ETN, converting your investment back to cash, potentially at a time you didn’t want it to, because you’d lose your position and your exposure to the asset, which undermines the long-term ‘buy and hold’ case. It might be worth waiting until Apri 2026 to see which providers actually offer this to avoid any issues, but hopefully the transition is smooth and obviously everyone has to make their own decisions.

Exposure vs. Ownership

Let’s now look at the difference between exposure and ownership.

Let’s be clear:

  • A positive step forward for UK investors.
  • Offers a regulated and accessible way to gain exposure.
  • Currently highly tax-efficient.
  • Provides price exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum.
  • A fantastic option for many investors.

But we have to stress the difference between exposure and ownership.

When you buy an ETN, you do not own the underlying Bitcoin.

Article image

You own a security, a promise from an issuer, that they will track the price. You are trusting them to securely hold the crypto and honour that promise. This is counterparty risk. You don’t hold the keys; they do. This goes against the entire core principle of Bitcoin, which is financial sovereignty. The whole point of holding your own crypto in a hardware wallet is to remove the need to trust any third party and to ensure financial sovereignty.

If you want to understand the true meaning of financial sovereignty, holding your assets in cold storage using a hardware wallet like a Trezor is key to ensuring true sovereignty.

Closing Thoughts

To summarise,

  • Crypto ETNs is an ISA are a great tool for tax-efficient price exposure to cryptocurrencies on offer.
  • However, they’re not, and will never be, a replacement for self-custody.

We’d love to know what you think.

  • Is this a game-changer for UK investors?
  • Or are you going to wait and see what happens in this space for a few months, particularly until after April 2026?
