Buying safely
Where to buy the Trezor Safe 5
Before buying any hardware wallet, always purchase directly from the official manufacturer, not from an unofficial third party. This is extremely important for security reasons.
Trezor is part of SatoshiLabs in Prague. The Safe 5 offers enhanced features over the Trezor Model T, including a touchscreen, improved security, a sleeker display and Gorilla Glass.
The Trezor range
How the Safe 5 fits into the family
Trezor has also released the more affordable Trezor Safe 3, which has different features and uses two buttons rather than a touchscreen.

The previous premium model.
The newest premium model.
It has been a long time since a new premium model was released, so the Safe 5 arrives at a good time.
Why cold storage matters
True ownership of your crypto
One of the aims of crypto is the ability to be your own bank and have true sovereignty over your crypto assets. A hardware wallet helps you do this.
If you store assets in a hot wallet or on a centralised exchange, then in most cases you do not truly hold your crypto—they do. The Trezor Safe 5 supports thousands of cryptocurrencies.
Transparent security
Open source and EAL 6+ protection
Trezor devices are open source, unlike some other hardware wallets. This allows the community to audit the code and removes concerns about hidden behaviour behind the scenes.
The Safe 5 uses an NDA-free EAL 6+ Secure Element, a very high level of hardware security and an upgrade from previous models.
Extra physical defence
MicroSD PIN encryption
The Safe 5 includes a MicroSD slot on the side, providing an extra layer of physical security. You can use a MicroSD card together with your PIN, adding protection against physical attacks.
You can enable or disable the feature in device settings, or factory-reset the device and restore it using your seed phrase.
Resilient recovery
SLIP-39 Shamir backup
You can combine MicroSD protection with Trezor's SLIP-39 Shamir backup system and keep seed phrase shares in different physical locations. This reduces the chance of a single point of failure.
Firmware integrity
Bootloader verification
Every time the Safe 5 connects to a computer, bootloader verification checks that its firmware is authentic and signed by SatoshiLabs. It also lets you know if the firmware is not the latest version.
Everyday durability
Gorilla Glass, touch and haptics
The Safe 5 uses durable, scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, roughly nine times stronger than standard glass.
The responsive touchscreen includes haptic feedback, giving a small vibration when you confirm an action. Compared with the Model T, the Safe 5 costs only around €20 more.
Limitations
Disadvantages in more detail
The Safe 5 may appear to have a larger screen than the Model T, but the screen is actually the same size. People with larger fingers can use a rubber-tip pointer.
The included USB-C cable is short. Some DeFi platforms may also require workarounds.
Unboxing
What to check before plugging it in
Check for secure cellophane wrapping, a tear-away strip and a holographic sticker covering the USB-C port. If anything is missing, do not use the device.
The Safe 5 and Model T are similar in size, but the Safe 5 has a sleeker front. Compared with the smaller two-button Safe 3, the Safe 5 feels more modern.
Compatibility
